The Berlin Wall
is perhaps the most famous human artifact in modern world history. Built in 1961 at the height of the Cold War, the Wall physically symbolized the ideological and political divide between the Western Bloc and the USSR. In 1984, Thierry Noir became the first artist to paint the Berlin Wall without permission for miles. This revolutionary action inspired other artists, and over the next five years the Wall was covered in artwork and paintings, creating a "protest scroll." As Noir said, painting the Wall made him feel more powerful than he did. For years, the Wall stood as an oppressive symbol of a divided world, embodying a history of separation and struggle. Noir's work transformed this iconic symbol of war into a symbol of hope and gave it a truly human meaning.
